How much rebate can I get for a heat pump in Ontario?

Under Ontario's Home Renovation Savings program, air-source heat pumps pay $1,250 per ton for non-gas homes, capped at $7,500, and $500 per ton for Enbridge natural gas homes, capped at $2,000. A typical 3-ton oil, propane or electric home is therefore $3,750 from Ontario, before any federal amount.

Quick answer

Under Ontario's Home Renovation Savings program, air-source heat pumps pay $1,250 per ton for non-gas homes, capped at $7,500, and $500 per ton for Enbridge natural gas homes, capped at $2,000. A typical 3-ton oil, propane or electric home is therefore $3,750 from Ontario, before any federal amount.

The short version

  • Non-gas air-source heat pump: $1,250 per ton, cap $7,500.
  • Natural gas: $500 per ton, cap $2,000.
  • A 3-ton non-gas system: $3,750 from Ontario.
  • Pre-approval is required before installation.

Use your current fuel, not the new one

The Ontario rate follows the home's existing heating situation. An oil home switching to propane backup still starts from the non-gas oil rate for the heat pump calculation. A natural gas home uses the lower Enbridge gas rate.

Tonnage matters

A 2-ton heat pump at the non-gas rate is $2,500; 3 tons is $3,750; 4 tons is $5,000. Bigger is not automatically better, because the system still has to be sized to the house. The rebate follows the installed eligible system's capacity.

Do not bake in unconfirmed money

The federal rebate can add $2,000, and potentially up to $10,000 for a qualifying household, but its Ontario income threshold and final process are pending. Keep the confirmed Ontario figure separate from federal scenarios.

What to do next

1

Identify the fuel heating the home today.

2

Find the proposed heat pump tonnage.

3

Multiply by the correct Ontario rate and apply the cap.

Is there a rebate for a furnace alone?

A furnace by itself does not receive the heat pump rebate discussed here. The rebate is tied to the eligible heat pump installation.

Do rental properties get the same rate?

Rental properties have a separate lower heat pump rate in the program materials. Use the property type that matches the home before quoting a number.
