The Federal Heat Pump Rebate: $2,000 to $10,000, Explained Honestly
Announced October 8, 2026, and confirmed in an update on October 21. Here's exactly what's known — sorted into what is confirmed, what is announced, and what hasn't been published yet.
The settled facts
- Pays $2,000 to eligible households
- Pays up to $10,000 for households below their province's median after-tax income
- No energy audit required
- Stacks with Ontario's Home Renovation Savings rebate
- Eligible cold-climate heat pumps must be on the federal Eligible Products List
Coming, per the government
- Applications through an online portal opening early 2027
- Installations on or after November 1, 2026 count — confirmed October 21, 2026
- Fast approvals promised once the portal opens
Still unknown
- Ontario's exact dollar income cut-off for the up-to-$10,000 tier
- The final claim process and payment timing
- Full equipment and documentation rules
Until the cut-off is published, any site promising you the full $10,000 is guessing. Treat it as "up to" — because that's what it is.
Does the November 1 date really matter?
Yes — it's a hard line. Installations completed on or after November 1, 2026 count toward the federal rebate; an installation finished in late October does not, even by a few days. If you're booking a switch this fall, that single date can be worth $2,000 to $10,000. Ask about it before your install date is set.
Should I wait until the portal opens in 2027 to install?
Waiting gains you nothing on the federal side — your November-or-later install counts either way — and it costs you a winter of oil or propane fills, roughly $6,000–$8,000 for many rural homes, while Ontario's HRS funding window runs down. The install date is what the federal program keys on, not the application date.
Is this the same as the old oil-to-heat-pump grant?
No. The old Oil to Heat Pump Affordability program closed July 31, 2026. This is a new, broader program — all heating fuels, no audit, income-tiered amounts. Some websites still describe the old program; check dates on anything you read, including here: figures on this page were verified October 2026.
Federal rebate — common questions
How will I know if I qualify for the $10,000 tier?
Once Ottawa publishes Ontario's income cut-off. If your household is anywhere near the median, it's worth having your estimate on file now — you'll be able to claim when the portal opens in early 2027 for any install dated November 1, 2026 or later.
Do I apply for the federal rebate myself?
The program is built around an online portal, so the application is yours to file — but the equipment list, install date and documentation all come from your install. Keep your invoice; the details matter.
Can renters or landlords claim it?
The program is aimed at households heating their own homes. Specific eligibility rules beyond that haven't been fully published yet — we'll update this page when they are.
